Fire in Baja California, Mexico – October 24th, 2008
In this image, taken on the 22nd of October, we can see Baja California. This land is divided into two Mexican states: Baja California and Baja California Sur (South). The border with the United States is also visible in the extreme upper portion of the image, as is San Diego, USA, in the top left corner.
In the first close-up we can see a fire burning in Baja California near the coastline, south of San Diego. The smoke from this fire can be clearly seen blowing out to sea.
In the second image detail we get a better look at Montague Island (Isla Montague) in the Sea of Cortes. A slight algal bloom is visible off the coast.
In the third close-up, we can observe the town of Guerrero Negro, the point of entry into the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Near this town is the Ojo de Liebre Lagoon (Laguna Ojo de Liebre), part of the Vizcaino Biosphere reserve, famous for the gray whales that come there.
