Fire by Mozambique-Zimbabwe Border, South of Lake Malawi

15.5S 35.1E

September 9th, 2011 Category: Fires, Image of the day, Lakes

Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe - September 9th, 2011

The large body of water in the upper left quadrant is Lake Malawi, is an African Great Lake and the southernmost lake in the Great Rift Valley system of East Africa. This lake, the third largest in Africa and the eighth largest lake in the world, is located between Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

The air over the region appears slightly hazy, due most likely to smoke from wildfires burning in the area. One such fire can be observed in the lower left quadrant, on the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border, releasing a thick white plume of smoke towards the southwest.
