India and Pakistan – November 8th, 2012

Hundreds of fires across over 250 kilometers (150 miles) from east to west in northern India release a thick cloud of smoke that covers the Punjab state and cities such as Delhi. The fires are mostly agricultural in nature, in order to clear fields for planting, clearing out some pests that eat crops and turning the previous growing season’s crop residues into fertilizing ash. However, the smoke can also be very harmful to human health, aggravating heart and lung disease, particularly in children and the elderly.
