Dust Blowing Southward off Salt Flats by Mar Chiquita, Argentina

Argentina – July 7th, 2012

Dust, likely composed of salt and other minerals, blows due southward off the salt flats located near the northern shores of Mar Chiquita, a saline lake in the Argentine province of Córdoba. Visible to the northwest are two other large salt flats: the Salinas Grandes. A plume of smoke from a wildfire near the foothills of the Andes can be observed north of those salt flats, at the top left. The smoke is blowing to the south, similar to the dust.

A plume of smoke from a fire north of the Mar Chiquita, a saline lake in Córdoba, Argentina, blows northwards and then northwestwards. Some smoke also appears to be hanging in the air just south of the Salinas Grandes, situated to the west of the lake.

Smoke from Fires in Bolivia - August 26th, 2010

The skies over huge expanses of land in South America continue to be choked by smoke from fires blazing in Bolivia. The thumbnail image focuses on the smoke over Bolivia, east of the Salar de Uyuni, the large white salt flat at the lower left edge), and the Andes Mountains.

Upon opening the full image, the cloud of smoke can be seen reaching from Manáus, Brazil, in the North, to near the salt flats of the Salinas Grandes and the green saline lake called Mar Chiquita, in Argentina, in the South.

Several fires release plumes of smoke towards the South in northern-central Argentina. Several are clustered west of the Paraná River (right side of image), while another is located east of the Andes Mountains (top center).

Also visible here are Mar Chiquita, the largest natural salt lake in Argentina (bottom center) and the salt flats of the Salinas Grandes to the northwest, white and tan in color. Upon opening the full image, several fires can be observed just north of Mar Chiquita.
