Thick Dust Blowing to Southwestern Yemen15.1N 45.0E
Dust from the sandy Rub’ al Khali desert on the Arabian Peninsula blows southwest across Yemen. The escarpment of the western highlands appears to prevent much of the dust from blowing over the Red Sea (left) or the Gulf of Aden (below).
The dust thus appears quite dense where it is trapped behind the mountains in the southwestern corner of the country. In places where the altitude is lower, however, it is gradually making its way to the shoreline.
