The Deseado River flows across the arid steppes of Santa Cruz province, in southern Argentine Patagonia. The river appears whitish tan, in contrast with the surrounding light brown landscape.

The river empties into the Atlantic Ocean by Puerto Deseado, after a course of approximately 380 miles (610 km) across the province. Greenish sediments can be seen along the shoreline by its mouth.

Upon opening the full image, a pale tan horizontal line can be seen crossing the landscape and the offshore sediments, going over the coast just north of Puerto Deseado. This line appears to be composed of dust, or could possibly be smoke although the former seems more probable due to the tan color. Its origin is a spot by a plateau south and west of a bend in the river.
