Dust Spreading Across Yemen Towards Bab-el-Mandeb Straits

12.5N 43.3E

April 27th, 2011 Category: Dust Storms

Red Sea - April 15th, 2011

Strong winds kick up dust from the sandy Rub’ al Khali desert on the Arabian Peninsula, blowing clouds of it west and southwest across Yemen (right).

In the full image, the dust can be seen reaching the escarpment of the western highlands. These mountains prevent much of it from blowing across the Bab-el-Mandeb straits.

Northwest of the straits, however, some dust does reach over the Red Sea. The light tan coloring above the sea appears to be a combination of airborne dust and sun glint.
