Dust Plume Originating in Libya Extends Over Mediterranean for Thousands of Kilometers

Dust from the Saharan Desert in Libya blew over the Gulf of Sidra (left) and the Mediterranean Sea in late January (click here for previous image). The plume extended roughly 1,110 kilometers (700 miles) to the north, reaching over the gulf, past the western end of the Jebel Akhdar range and across the Mediterranean Sea all the way to southern Italy.
