Dust Over West Africa Between Senegal and Geba Rivers

16.3N 15.8W

April 14th, 2012 Category: Dust Storms

West Africa - April 12th, 2012

Dust blows off the coast of West Africa, over Senegal, the Gambia and Guinea Bissau. The dust partially veils the Senegal River, visible as a greenish line by the coast near the image center, and the Geba River, whose wide mouth can be observed near the bottom of the image.

The dust is thicker over the coast between these two rivers, obscuring other important watercourses such as the Casamance and Gambia Rivers. Some dust can be seen by the Senegal-Mauritania border (marked by the Senegal River), but in general the airborne particles were not carried much farther north, allowing the green waters of the Bay of Arguin to be observed clearly.
