Dust from the Sahara Desert blows off the coast of Morocco, in northern Africa, towards the southwest. In the lower left quadrant, it can be seen passing over the Canary Islands, including Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria (from above to below).
In the upper half of the image, the Strait of Gibraltar can be seen separating Morocco (below) and Spain (above). This narrow strait – only 7.7 nautical miles (14.24 km) at its narrowest point – also connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.
