Dust off West Africa - March 14th, 2012

Dust from the Sahara Desert continues to blow off the coast of West Africa, over Mauritania, Senegal, the Gambia and Guinea Bissau, and over the Cape Verde islands. Dust has been blowing over this region over the last few days: click here for previous images.

Such dust storms, also known as sand storms, are very common in this arid region. Dust storms arise when a gust front or other strong wind blows loose sand and dirt from a dry surface.
