Dust Blowing over Gulf of Oman from Iranian Coast
Sand blows off the coast of Iran’s Hormozgān Province, into the Gulf of Oman. The dust particles, however, do not yet reach all the way across the gulf into Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
Hormozgān has 1,000 km (620 mi) of coastline. The province is primarily mountainous, consisting of the southern tip of the Zagros range. The sand appears to be blowing to the coast from farther inside the province’s interior.
This region experiences a very hot and humid climate, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 120F (49C) in summers. There is very little precipitation year round.
