Dust and von Kármán Vortex Streets Off Coast of West Africa

15.9N 19.8W

May 17th, 2012 Category: Clouds, Dust Storms

West Africa - May 17th, 2012

Dust blows over Mauritania (upper right) and Senegal (lower right), off the coast of West Africa, and over the Cape Verde archipelago (center left). The dust appears most dense in the upper right quadrant, just west of the Bay of Arguin, whose green waters are significantly obscured by the airborne particles. Also visible through the dust is the Senegal River, a green line near the center right, marking the Mauritania-Senegal border. Visible through the veil of dust in the lower left quadrant are von Kármán vortex streets, created by the movement of air over the Cape Verde islands.
