December 28th, 2010 Category: Deserts

Saudi Arabia - December 22nd, 2010

This image shows part of southern Saudi Arabia (upper left quadrant) and stretches across Yemen (lower left and center) to eastern Oman (upper right quadrant).

While some brown, rocky ridges of mountains and hills can be observed by the coast, particularly in Yemen, most of the image is occupied by the sandy Rub’ al Khali desert.

The desert is lighter towards the north and darker to the south, changing in color from tan to yellow to orange. In the full image, many rows of high reddish orange dunes can be discerned. The ridge of reddish dunes marks the border between Saudi Arabia to the north and Yemen and Oman to the south.
