The Bay of Arguin, or Banc d’Arguin, in Mauritania, appears green in color due to the presence of phytoplankton. The land surrounding the bay is arid Sahara Desert.

Moving further inland, the Adrar Plateau appears as a brown area by the right edge of the image. It is a highland area of the Sahara Desert in northern Mauritania. The plateau is known for its gorges, regs (stony deserts) and shifting sand dunes.
