Condensation Trails and Phytoplankton off Irish Coast

Thick condensation trails from airplanes streak over the ocean west of Ireland. Below, partially obscured by the trails, is part of a phytoplankton bloom.

Some western areas of the traditional province of Connacht can be seen to the right. In the full image, the western coast of the province of Ulster is visible as well.

One interesting feature along the Connacht coast is Clew Bay (right of center). According to tradition, there are 365 islands in the bay: one for every day of the year.

Clew Bay is overlooked by Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain, and the mountains of North Mayo.
