In this FAPAR image of part of the east coast of Brazil, much of the land appears green, indicating good photosynthetic activity. Some yellow patches, where little photosynthetic activity is present, can be seen scattered about the landscape and near the metropolitan area of São Paulo, near the coast. On the other hand, red areas indicating high activity become more dense as one moves southward.

Many of these red areas are in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. The humid tropical Serra do Mar coastal forests cover the state’s narrow coastal zone, which is crossed by numerous short streams. The central part of the state is home to the Araucaria moist forests, dominated by emergent Brazilian pines.
