As fires continue to blaze in northern India  (click here for previous images), smoke drifts across the border with Pakistan and hangs over the Indus River Valley. The valley is partially visible through the veil of smoke, appearing as a thick, greenish band. In the upper right quadrant, the Himalayas can be seen, providing a barrier that prevents the smoke from spreading northward.

India and Pakistan – November 4th, 2012

Thick smoke from a very large number of fires hangs over Northern India, but is prevented from blowing northwards by the Himalayas. The fires are likely agricultural in nature. Farmers use fire to clear the fields of weeds and residue from previous years crops and to add nutrients to the soil.

Smoke Blows Over Pakistan’s Indus River Valley Once Again

After a few clear days, smoke from agricultural fires in northern India once again blows westward over Pakistan (click here for previous images). Here, the green land of the Indus River Valley around the brown, sediment-laden Indus River can be seen through the translucent veil of smoke.

Smoke billowing out from fires in India hangs over much of the northern part of the country. Here, the smoke does not extend far over the Pakistan border, whereas previously it had blown westward over the Indus River Valley (click here for images of smoke over that area).

India and Pakistan – November 19th, 2012

The smoke from agricultural fires in the state of Punjab, India, that has been blowing about the northern part of the country and into the neighboring nations of Pakistan and Bangladesh over the last few weeks (click here for previous images), appears to be clearing slightly. Here, northwestern India is only thinly veiled, and the Indus River Valley in Pakistan is no longer obscured by smoke.
