A phytoplankton bloom can be seen in the Bay of Biscay off the west coast of France, near the mouth of the Gironde Estuary. The sediments spilling out of the estuary appear yellowish green, while the phytoplankton bloom is more blue in color, with spiralled patterns due to ocean currents.

Bay of Biscay – May 4th, 2013

A large phytoplankton bloom stains the waters of the Bay of Biscay, between Spain (below) and France (upper right), a greenish color. The bloom has been present in this area since mid-April (click here for previous images). The differences in color within the bloom may be an indication of different species of phytoplankton.

A phytoplankton bloom can be seen off the coast of France, in the Bay of Biscay, roughly parallel to the French shoreline (click here for previous image). The bloom appears darkest to the southeast, indicating the greatest presence of the tiny microorganisms in that area. The green and blue tones in the northwestern half of the bloom may indicate multiple phytoplankton species.
