Algeria - October 13th, 2010

The Tassili n’Ajjer is a mountain range in the Sahara desert in southeast Algeria. Its name means “Plateau of the Rivers” in Tamazight, referring to a time long ago when the climate was significantly wetter.

Upon opening the full image some of the old, dry riverbeds can still be observed cutting through the mountains. Although the rivers no longer flow abundantly, due to the altitude and the water-holding properties of the sandstone, the vegetation is somewhat richer than the surrounding desert.

Strong winds kick up clouds of sand and dust from the Sahara Desert over Algeria. The dust is whitish tan in color like the desert sands to the south, in contrast with the golden orange tones of the expansive ergs to the north.

The lower half of this image is mostly veiled by the shifting sands. Just below the center, the Ahaggar Mountains are mostly obscured; only the northwestern part of the range can be seen. In the upper half, several bands of dust can be seen blowing over the brown mountains of the Tassili n’Ajjer range.

Algeria - April 28th, 2010

Part of the Illizi province (wilaya), in the south-eastern corner of Algeria, is visible here. The upper half of the image shows the orangey sand dunes of the Sahara Desert, while the lower half shows the brown slopes of the Tassili n’Ajjer mountain range.

The name of the range means “Plateau of the Rivers” in Tamazight. As the name suggests, the topography of the range is deeply indented, eroded by rivers in the past. Today the range is drier, although due to the altitude and the water-holding properties of the sandstone, the vegetation is somewhat richer than the surrounding desert.

Algeria - February 25th, 2010

The dark brown areas of this image are part of the Tassili n’Ajjer, a mountain range in the Sahara Desert in southeast Algeria, North Africa. The name, in Tamazight, means “Plateau of the Rivers”, referring to a time when the climate was repeatedly far wetter than today.

The range is composed largely of sandstone. The highest point is Adrar Afao, at an elevation of 2158 m. Erosion in the area has resulted in nearly 300 natural rock arches being formed, along with many other spectacular landforms.

Because of the altitude and the water-holding properties of the sandstone, the vegetation is somewhat richer than the surrounding desert; it includes a very scattered woodland of the endangered endemic species Saharan Cypress and Saharan Myrtle in the higher eastern half of the range.
