Bolivia and Argentina - September 29th, 2009

Several volcanoes and mountains are visible in this orthorectified image of Bolivia and northwestern Argentina. The peak that looks similar to a bull’s eye, as it is surrounded by a smoother, flatter ring, is called Cerro Colorado, and is located directly on the Bolivia-Argentina border. The other peaks of interest, Cerro Lípez and Uturuncu, are both located fully in Bolivia.

Cerro Lípez is a stratovolcano in the Cordillera de Lípez in Sud Lípez province of Potosí Department, in the southwest of the country. It has twin peaks and rises to 5,929 m. It can be seen here northwest of Cerro Colorado, near the top of the image.

Uturuncu, or Uturunku, is a stratovolcano and the highest summit in southwestern Bolivia, visible southwest of Cerro Colorado at the center of the left edge of the image. It displays young well-preserved lava flows at its summit which were erupted during the Pleistocene period. The volcano also shows fumarolic activity.
