Phytoplankton Bloom East of Canada - September 6th, 2009

A phytoplankton bloom flourishes in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of Canada. The bloom appears green around the edges with varying shades of blue in the center.

Upon opening the full image, the coast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland can be seen. Located 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) off the east coast of North America, it is the most populous part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The island of Newfoundland is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle and from Cape Breton Island by the Cabot Strait. It blocks the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River, creating the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the world’s largest estuary.
